Power Steering Conversion

Power steering Conversion I  decided to convert the FJ40 to power steering in line with modern driving norms and to introduce some safety into the steering system as 1971 FJ40s have a one piece steering column running directly off the steering box with no impact absorbing properties in the event of an accident. This is being converted to a collapsing rod/column design sourced with 55/60/75 series components and mated to the chassis with a McKinnons Cruisers 60 series power steering box. The components The original column, steering box, riveted box perch, tie rod, pivot and steering arms were.     The McKinnon mounting kit and 60 series power steering box were attached         McKinnons Cruisers shock tower kit to clear the new steering geometry   HZJ75 OEM lines were massaged and secured between the 40 chassis rails

Initial build plan Having acquired the rolling chassis of a 1971 FJ40 with a useable chassis with a rusty body, the plan is to power it with a spare 1HZ I already own from our Coaster engine rebuild as well as fitting a more modern H55F 5 speed behind it from a HZJ75. In order to make it safer, it will received a collapsible steering column, power steering pump from a 60 series Landcruiser with 70 series steering arms/rods. Whilst working on the front end, the brakes will be upgraded from drum brakes to bolt on 60 series disc brakes. A full disc brake rear end from a 75 series Landcruiser with integrated handbrake is also planned. McKinnons engine mounts, transmission mount and 60 series power steer kit will be used. The plan is to replace the rear part of the the body tub with a freshly pressed aftermarket import body tub and utilise the front section of the original body. The body style and trim is planned to remain period correct to 1971 where possible. Most of the existing front cl...
