Chassis Strip, Repair, Clean & Paint

The chassis was thoroughly stripped down to the bare chassis, pressure washed, degreased, scraped add wire wheeled before the condition was evaluated.

The chassis had 53 years of wear and tear on it but had held up very well considering and had many sections with original paint still under chassis protection films with some sporadic light surface rust which came off very easily on the wire wheel.

The rear chassis member and diagonal supports had an aftermarket tow bar attached which trapped soil and water and had allowed some deep rust to spread in these areas. Rather that cut out and weld in new sections, a decision was made to instead replace the 3 sections with McKinnons replacement section.

The engine mount, power steering box mount and gearbox/transfer case mounts were added and old mounts removed.

The chassis was restored with KBS Chassis Coater Pro kit which includes AquaKlean an industrial strength water-based cleaner / degreaser, KBS RustBlast a powerful rust remover / metal etch, RustSeal a rust preventive coating applied with multiple roller coats and BlackTop a topcoat With UV Protection & Flexibility in OEM Satin Black applied with a couple of coats of a HVLP spray gun.

Eastwood Internal Frame Coating was used to snake through and paint and protect the internal frame sections and was sealed with Bilt Hamber Dynax UC an extreme duty anti-corrosion wax for cavities.
